THE SAMARIA QUEST PRIVATE EXPERIENCE

This is one of the most beautiful regions of Crete, located on the western part of the island, South of Chania. Due to the distance we recommend to choose your accommodation closest to the western part of Chania city and the surrounding touristy areas. This will save you time… Due to the mountainous landscape of the island and in order to cover the distances on Crete, it takes time.

We propose this tour, as we think it is worth enjoying what the Cretan nature has to offer ….And Yes we think that Samaria gorge tour is epic!!!

You start your private experience well organized, we propose to start early, in order to avoid the crowds. We will pick you up from your accommodation and drive towards Xyloskalo in the midst of the White Mountains, at an altitude of 1250m.

We will start our stretching exercises to warm up and we are ready…

It is not an easy walk through the park but it’s not impossible. It stretches down 16km from Xyloskalo to Agia Roumeli following the route carved by nature and the river over the centuries. The first 2-3km (from Xyloskalo starting point) are steep, as you will be walking down using the natural path curved by the river. (in some areas you will find a wooden side handrail – but if you have problems with your knees, might be a good idea to take something to hold on to)

There are informative signs along the way, you will not feel lost…

We will stop along the way for pictures and to refill our bottles with fresh water and we will reach the exit of the gorge, where we can find a nice small coffee shop to enjoy a beer or a coffee. From that point, we need another 2-3 km to reach the village Agia Roumeli, by the sea, where later the same day we will take the ferry to reach Chora Sfakion…

Depending on your accommodation we need at least couple of hours from Sfakia to reach back Chania or Rethymnon.

The tour/Round trip includes

Please note:

• It takes time to hike through the Samaria gorge. Estimate 6 to 7 hours (in the gorge). It’s not a race, some experienced hikers do it in 4 hours, but keep in mind that we will be stopping for pictures and generally we will be enjoying nature…
• You have to be physically fit, if you have knee, hip or angle problems, avoid it. The tour as described is a private tour. Of course we will see people along the way walking through the gorge, or even at the entrance at Xyloskalo, but groups of people disperse pretty fast, depending on their pace and speed…
